Drupal Encryption: How are you using it? (not phishing, looking for generalities, not specifics)

I’m currently researching a variety of modules, for a major migration from D7 to D8/9/10. In the process, I’m checking reported install numbers, issue queue, etc., to get a sense of momentum. Anyway, I’ve found the D8 install numbers for the encryption API/plugin modules seem to FAR outpace the dependent modules. For example:

  • Key: 27,308
  • Encrypt: 21,108
  • Real AES: 18,672

Okay, these seem reasonable… but when I look at dependent modules:

  • Webform encrypt: 3,097
  • Field encrypt: 896 (+182 for 3.x version)
  • File Encrypt: 83

When I look at these numbers, I feel like there’s a big gap between reported installs for the foundational elements and the conrtib modules that actually use them, so now I think that clearly I’m missing something.

So I’m wondering if more developers are rolling their own solutions that use the API? What kinds of things are you encrypting? Are there other modules I don’t know about yet? Am I using components I don’t need to?

I am NOT looking for specifics or for anybody to divulge sensitive info (please don’t). Just more of a general query about how the API might be leveraged outside of the contrib space.

Appreciate feedback, ideas, thoughts.
