Having a separate Date and Time column vs a DateTime column

I understand that memory/storage difference between one column vs two columns is going to be negligible unless the database is very large. And I realize there are functions to either combine date and time or split datetime.

Is there any real performance advantage for one method over the other, or is it mainly preference? Would the decision depend on whether date and time will mostly be used separately or always together?
