What is the best way to have an Access front end with SQL Express back-end between two sites across the USA?

Databases and Programming are two things I extremely low knowledge in. My goal here is more or less to build infrastructure that best suits my engineers goal.

One of our Engineers is creating an access database. My boss is pushing to use SQL Express since it is free and he says it ties into Access pretty well. The big obstacle I have is that we have one factory here in Indiana and two down in Georgia. The connection between the sites is pretty slow as we are part of a big parent network.

As I said before, my knowledge is limited. So I may make some jackass statements… lol. But basically at each site, our employees will need to access this single database from both Indiana and Georgia. Do you think it would be possible, or even “acceptable” for me to create two servers with a DFS that replicates the two databases between the sites? Or could that spell bad news?

Or should we just pick a site and build the single SQL Express database there and then deal with the issue of users at the offsite location having slow load times to the DB?

My boss is pretty old school, is there maybe a better/less antiquated system than to implement SQL Express here as the backend with the front end access database?
